University of Lahore Hospital (ULH) conducted a workshop titled “Quality Tools for Operational Efficiency & Business Performance in Hospitals”. The workshop brought together healthcare executives from ULH and the University College of Medicine & Dentistry (UCMD) for an interactive learning experience.
The workshop was led by Dr Sidra Jamil, Deputy Medical Superintendent & Incharge Quality Assurance at ULH, who shared practical insights into the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Dashboards, and Scorecards to support quality improvement and informed decision-making.
The session also featured Mr Waqar Mirza, Director at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, as the guest speaker. He led sessions on quality improvement tools used across leading healthcare systems, including Root Cause Analysis, Fishbone Diagrams, Pareto Charts, Control Charts, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Cycle.
What We Learned
- Early screening helps identify common eye conditions before they progress.
- Refractive errors, cataracts, allergic eye disease, and dry eye syndrome were frequently observed.
- Several patients showed signs of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy requiring further evaluation.
- Community-based eye care services improve access to timely diagnosis and treatment.
Key Highlights
- Approximately 200 patients received comprehensive eye care services.
- 65 individuals were provided with free prescription eyeglasses.
- Around 80 patients received essential eye medications and treatments.
- Vision screening, refraction services, and ophthalmic consultations were conducted.
- Patients requiring advanced care were referred for further management at University of Lahore Hospital.
The workshop included a hands-on segment where participants applied quality improvement tools to real hospital scenarios. The session also featured an applied case study and group exercise, providing participants with opportunities to translate learning into practice.
The event concluded with a token of appreciation presented by Dr Zahid Pervaiz, Medical Superintendent, ULH, to Dr Sidra Jamil for facilitating and organising the workshop, and to Mr Waqar Mirza for sharing his expertise and valuable insights as the guest speaker. Certificates were also presented to all participants at the end of the workshop.
By combining expert guidance with practical application, the workshop strengthened participants’ understanding of structured quality improvement tools.
